As originally established in the Ravenloft: Realm of Terror boxed set known as "the Black Box" released in 1990, the Ravenloft campaign setting was located in the Ethereal Plane. How Count von Zarovich became the darklord of Barovia was detailed in the novel I, Strahd: The Memoirs of a Vampire. Strahd von Zarovich, a vampire in the original AD&D Ravenloft I6 module 1983, became the first Darklord, both ruler and prisoner of his own personal domain of Barovia. Each domain is tailored to and mystically ruled by a being called a Darklord who is forever trapped and surrounded by magical mists surrounding the domain. It is an alternate time-space existence known as a pocket dimension or demiplane, called the Demiplane of Dread, which consists of a collection of land pieces called " domains", brought together by a mysterious force known only as the Dark Powers.
Ravenloft is a campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st and 2nd Editions.On the Wizards message boards there is a thread on this same topic, and in it a poster thinks that some of the outdoor maps might have been repeated from the Fantastic Locations line. Most of the ones from inside Castle Ravenloft I think I could recreate with clever use of the new Dungeon Tiles, but the outdoor ones contain too many features impossible to replicate (at least with my current capabilities).
Almost every map is set askew, so that scanning for scaling up to battle mat use will be a great chore. squares scale map for use with miniatures. While I like the addition of the Delve format to published adventures, the map inclusion leaves something to be desired.Įach map in the 2 page tactical encounters is a small replication of a larger (not included) 5 ft. Like apparently many fans of 3.5 D&D who played earlier editions, I was excited to pick up Expedition to Castle Ravenloft.
